Porn Equality – Gay Viewers by US State

If it’s true what they say about married couples not having sex, then many are still turning to porn for their sexual satisfaction.

Pornhub recently got together with our friends at Buzzfeed to bring you our latest porn statistics. They asked us if the same might be true about gay married couples? Do the states with legalized gay marriage watch more gay porn than the states where it is still illegal?

The quick answer: yes. At 4.41%, states with legalized gay marriage watch 7% more gay porn than states without at 4.13%.

The results get trickier once you start looking at the map, state by state. The majority of states with a high percentage of gay viewers is in the South, where gay marriage is illegal in all states. Dixie loves dicks so much, that the percentage of gay viewers for every single state in the South is higher than the average of the legal gay marriage states.

In number one, holding a record 5.58% gay users, is a state where, funny enough, butt sex is still illegal: Mississippi. Louisiana is closely on its rear at 5.44%, and Georgia with 5.38%.

As for the States with legalized gay marriage, there’s no big surprises in the top 3: Hawaii at 5.38%, followed by notoriously liberal New York at 5.27%, and California with 5.27%.

Finally, like in all things, there must be a top and a bottom. In this case it’s Alaska, Montana, North Dakota and Idaho that have the lowest percentage of gay porn users, all below the 3% mark.

Over on the legalized marriage side, gay Minnesotans just got their right to marry, but they sure aren’t watching a lot of gay porn (nsfw)! Maybe they don’t know that Pornhub offers a huge selection for every preference?

    1. Wouldn’t it be anyone that watches a gay video? That’s how they are taking their stats. They are counting how many times each type of video is viewed. They probably log all ip’s, and that is your location.

  1. Any Chance you have the data behind this. The high percentage in Mississippi could easily be due to a far smaller percentage of the straight population looking at porn. It would be good to see if the percentage of porn viewers was similar to or equal to that of other states or weighted by that information. It seems like it could be misleading and it would be good to have the data behind the numbers.

    1. Good point! We did not look at the per capita usage for this study but we have a new post coming out soon which looks at that very topic.

  2. It makes sense that in states where gay people are most likely to have to live in the closet, the porn rate is much higher than in states with large openly-gay populations, where men are busy hooking up or fucking their boyfriends. All those repressed, straight-married ‘mos!

  3. This is really interesting, I wonder if they’re using “gay” as an umbrella for lesbian porn too? Because come on, who doesn’t love some lesbian porn!

    1. We only looked at searches in the Gay (male) section as the lesbian category is very popular with straight men and women.

  4. When pornographers and buzzfeed get together you know you’re getting nothing but the truth and whole truth. Right?

  5. I wonder why the southern states (not just the South but also the Southwest) have significantly higher percentages of gay than the northern ones.

  6. It would be great to see stats on women and their PornHub viewage! Is this something that can be done?

  7. that’s it. What about what kind of porn we are watching? There are several types of gay porn, just like there are many types of straight porn. You seem to lump all gay porn into one category. The stats for gays pale in comparison.

  8. I wonder what the stats would be if lesbian porn was included. Even if it is men or straight women watching it, it suggests that they are in support of lesbian action in some way. I imagine that the results would show a much higher percentage of watchers, which would further support the hypocrisy that people are comfortable watching two women have sex together on screen,as long as they dont have feelings for one another in real life. I guess it’s just too much for these Bible Beaters (pun intended) to handle.

  9. When will you FINALLY release insights about what are the popular search terms for men who like men / women who like women? thanks 🙂
