BDSM Searches on Pornhub

With the highly anticipated ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ movie on it’s way, clearly folks are interested in – or at least curious about – the BDSM scene. In fact, the book on which the movie is based sold over 100 million copies worldwide, and became the fastest selling paperback of all time.

This inspired our Pornhub statisticians (not unlike a group of horny housewives) to look a little deeper into BDSM. What countries watch the most BDSM videos? What US States watch the most BDSM videos? And what BDSM terms are they most likely to search for?

That’s bound to be interesting since we know BDSM is an overlapping abbreviation for Bondage and Discipline (BD), Dominance and Submission (DS), Sadism and Masochism (SM). Like so many things in life, what books can’t teach you, Pornhub can. Are you curious yet? Then read on.

BDSM Positions Worldwide

To see how BDSM interests varied around the world, we chose 24 countries and ranked them by the proportion of their searches for BDSM related terms. Some countries literally dominated the list like Austria at 1.87% (the highest we counted) followed by Germany, Denmark and Finland all above 1.6%. The lowest countries we recorded were Portugal (0.36%) and Brazil (0.79%) – clearly they’re content submissively bottoming our list.

In North America, the Canadians beat (or should we say whipped) the Americans butts with 1.31% versus 1.18%. China and Japan had equal BDSM interests at 1.1%, although we should note that tracking China’s habits is challenging since online porn is ‘officially’ restricted there – but hey, where there’s a willy, there’s a way. India’s vast population was a middle-of-the-road 1.39%, and in the Southern Hemisphere, 1.36% of Australians liked their porn BDSM style.

BDSM Search Terms by Country

We broke the results down by the same 24 countries to see how their tastes differ. Use the drop-down list in the upper-right of the chart to see the search proportions for each country.

“Punish” was by far the most popular BDSM term, taking the number 1 spot in 15 countries. Next was “bondage” which was number 1 in 8 countries, but the 2nd most popular term in 13 others. “Slave” managed to reach the top 2 in 10 countries including Austria, Italy and the Netherlands.

BDSM Search Terms by State

The top three BDSM search terms in the United States are “punish”, “bondage” and “slave” – the same as the worldwide results. We only found three states where “bondage” overtakes “punish” for the number 1 search; Maryland, Vermont and the District of Columbia. Click the drop-down list in the upper-right of the chart to see how the search terms rank in each individual state.

The following heat map let’s us see which states are the most likely to search for BDSM on Pornhub. When we look at “all terms”, the folks in Wyoming dominate the rest of the states, followed by Alaska, Vermont and West Virginia.

Use the drop-down list in the upper-right to see how the states rank for specific search terms. Oklahoma is most likely to search for the term “bdsm” and Montana for “bondage”. Vermont likes to search for “bound” videos and “spanking” is also a big hit there.

West Virginians are hot for the S&M side of things; they top the list for “dominate”, “dominatrix” and “slave” searches. Wyoming likes “latex” and “punish”, and Alaska likes to “whip” it (real-good).

Take note world leaders: The folks in Washington, D.C. are big into “submission”! Maybe their facade of world dominance is all an act.

great article! im surprised that BDSM related searches are so low. the idea of tagging vids with “punish” was something we had not thought of before. it actually inspired a theme for a new recording tonight!

Funny how the term “slave” seems to have considerably less erotic connotations in the southern states than in the north.
