Crash Course: Categories and Tags on Pornhub

By Pornhub | July 18, 2022

Welcome back to another Model Program Crash Course! This time around, we’re focusing on the importance of proper tagging and categorizing to help you get noticed and increase your pool of viewers, ultimately earning more in ad revenue.

While the quality of your video and an enticing thumbnail can go a long way in getting noticed, that’ll only matter if your video pops up on screen in the first place, and that's where categories and tags can make a difference.

Categories

Properly categorizing your video is very important and can affect its rating and views. Select up to 8 that are accurate, relevant, and best represent your video. Viewers like to know what they can expect from a video, so misleading viewers with categories that don’t match your video could bring on bad ratings. And a bad rating could affect views and your video’s chance of getting featured on the front page.

Exclusive is one of the most-watched category, so if you haven’t signed up for exclusivity, this is another great reason to do so. The exlusive category is automatically added only if you've enabled exclusivity; it's not a category you can add yourself (click here for more info).

We’ve also recently started publishing a new monthly blog titled “What’s Hot on Pornhub” where we share our predictions of trending categories and tags on our site. This changes monthly, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for what’s to come to boost views.

Tags

Properly picking and adding accurate tags to your video will help drive search results and expose your video to users who are looking for that kind of content. For example, if a user searches “doggystyle” and your video includes that tag, it will pop up when it’s searched.

Each video can have up to 16 tags, and we suggest you use them up and select wisely. Think about your videos and pick words that describe actions (rimming, scissoring), positions (doggystyle, cowgirl), settings (kitchen, library), objects (dildo, handcuffs) and attributes (petite, trimmed). Avoid picking tags that have already been chosen as categories. How you tag your video also affects your video’s rating and ultimately views and ad revenue.

We'd also suggest keeping your tag words as short as possible, as if you're texting someone. For example, if you want to include "blowjob," consider including "BJ" as well. If someone is looking for a clip that would involve a threesome, they might just search the terms "three" or "3some." Think of how you would searh for something specific.

The website will automatically select tags that are associated with the categories you chose, but you can always remove them if you’d like.

So to sum it up, every time you upload a clip, take the time to really think about what's in your video, how you would describe it, and what your viewers can expect. The categories and tags you select can help drive search results, increase views, and, when done properly, boost your chances of getting good ratings, getting featured, and building a trusting relationship between you and your fans.
