Eurovision Song Contest 2019

The Eurovision Song Contest is the longest-running annual international TV song competition. Beginning in 1956, the 2019 edition marked it’s 64th year. The finale took place on Saturday May 18  in Tel Aviv and ended with the victory of the Dutch singer Duncan Laurence with the song “Arcade”.

As the 26 performers sang and viewers from across Europe televoted for their favorites, we saw major changes to Pornhub’s normal traffic levels before, during and after the Eurovision finale show as often happens with hotly-anticipated televised events like the Superbowl or Sanremo festival.

The following list ranks the European countries with the largest traffic drops compared to their normal traffic levels on a Saturday night. Iceland, Estonia and Sweden, with traffic levels down more than -23%, -16% and -12% below normal. Several other countries with contestants in the finale made our list, so let’s take a deeper look.

Let’s see in detail what happened in the Netherlands. Dutch dropped an average of -3.5% during the show,  and had a peak down of -8%, but then jumped up to an incredibly +15% above normal levels just after the show ended. Seems like people got very excited for winning the competition!

We took a closer look at what happened in Italy along with Fanpage.it. Italy’s traffic dropped an average of -4.8% during the finale, reaching as low as -6%. Interestingly, nobody searched for “Mahmood” on Pornhub, the sexy singer who participated on behalf of Italy and which ended in second place.

Our friends from Journal du Geek asked us what happened in France during the Eurovision Finale. France’s average drop during the Finale was -4.4%, but traffic was down over -9% around 22:00 before rapidly recovering. After the show ended, the traffic went back to Pornhub’s usual traffic in France at 01:00.

Let’s see what happened in the United Kingdom, which took the last place in the competition.

U.K. traffic dropped -3.7% below average during the Eurovision finale, with a peak drop of -5% just after the show began, before starting to rise shortly after. Mid-way through the show, traffic crossed normal time-of-day averages, and then shot up a +4% over average just before the show ended.

Germany experienced a traffic drop during the finale, reaching as low as -8% at the beginning of the show. It kept a similar drop during the show, and the traffic only returned to normal time-of-day averages after the finale was over.
