Digging Deep Into Minecraft

Pornhub Insights has often revealed how television, sports, movies and video games have an effect on the porn habits of our users. Take for example our Insights on My Little Pony, Porn Parodies and the release of Fallout 4.

Our friends at Venture Beat asked us to do some digging for Minecraft trends, and we quickly discovered that it’s no exception. Released in 2011, Minecraft has sold over 70 million copies worldwide making it the third best-selling game of all time. Almost any device you can put your hands on is able to play Minecraft – much like watching Pornhub.

Since January 2014, searches for Minecraft have increased a total of 326% on Pornhub, with 108% of that growth happening in 2015.

As shown in our Marilyn Monroe and Kim Kardashian posts, news and events can often affect the volume of porn searches for a particular topic. In 2015 we found two such events that caused an increase in searches for Minecraft porn.

Around May 21, 2015 over 3 million people were duped into downloading a fake version of Minecraft. The app contained malware so the story was broadly covered by the media at that time. This event resulted in a 291% increase in Minecraft searches on Pornhub.

On June 14, 2015 we also saw a 154% increase in Minecraft searches. The likely cause? A new version of Minecraft featuring Microsoft’s hololens was being shown live the next day at the E3 Expo. Clearly, this had Minecraft fans excited in anticipation.

So what are they searching for?

In the interest of science, we looked to see if Minecraft porn actually exists on Pornhub. It turns out, yes it does. What does it look like? We’ll leave that up to your imagination, or you can head over to Pornhub and search for it yourself.

The most popular searches don’t always indicate what type of videos exist, but rather the type of videos people want to see. In the case of Minecraft, the most popular searches include expected terms like ‘minecraft hentai’ and ‘minecraft animation’. Other more interesting searches include ‘minecraft true love’ and ‘minecraft hard drilling’. Even searches for gameplay and tutorial based ‘lets play minecraft’ videos can be found.

So how do we know that people aren’t searching for these terms by mistake – maybe by confusing Pornhub’s search bar for Google’s? (Hey, it could happen). To find out, we can look at the most common searches preceeding a search for Minecraft. The average person visiting Pornhub views around 8 pages before finding the right video to get the job done. It’s a process of refining results to find that video that fits their current mood.

In the case of Minecraft searches, the average viewer is interested in all kinds of porn related to video games. Just before searching for Minecraft, the most searched for term is ‘halo’ followed by ‘clash of clans’ and ‘call of duty’. Apparently if ‘lego’ and ‘pokemon’ porn aren’t doing the trick, it’s worth trying some Minecraft.

Anatomy of a Minecraft Searcher

So who are these Minecraft searchers? 80% of the time, they’re between the ages of 18 and 24, while Millennials (those under 35) represent 91% of all Minecraft searches. Proportionally, 18 to 24 year olds are 498% more likely to seek out Minecraft porn than all other age groups.

Men are proportionately 58% more likely to be searching for Minecraft porn than their female counterparts. In our 2015 Year in Review we found that 24% of Pornhub’s visitors worldwide are women, but in this case they represent only 15% of Pornhub’s Minecraft viewers.

Digging Devices

A full 82% of Minecraft searches come from mobile devices including phones (65%) and tablets (17%). That’s much higher than the typical traffic proportions coming to Pornhub, which may indicate that people playing Minecraft on their phone or tablet are much more likely to take a Pornhub break during their portable gameplay. If we look at the proportion of Minecraft searches compared to all other searches, it’s tablets that are 112% more likely to be used for Minecraft Porn than phones or desktop computers.

Considering these results, I’m rather curious about how much of that 18-24 demographic is really just kids who get past the age gate, although gathering stats on that might be a bit complicated for a variety of reasons.
