It’s All Coming up Anal

Just around a year ago we teamed up with Vice for a long hard look into America’s obsession with all things anal. We’re pairing up with them once more to patch up some of the gaping holes that were left in our last report and are specifically going to be looking at search trends surrounding anal content on Pornhub from 2009 until now, on a global level. There appears to be some substantial fiber to this #2 round of anal-specific data, so let’s get started.

Our primary interest in taking a look at anal searches over the course of the last few years was to determine whether there has been an increase or decrease in these types of searches among our users or if it had more or less remained the same. As you can see in the chart below, there has indeed been a steady increase in anal searches on Pornhub over the course of the past 6 years and change. Specifically, there has been an overal growth in the popularity of anal searches of 120% in the United States and 78% worldwide, which is in line with the fact that more and more people are experimenting with anal sex in the bedroom as well, according to The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The 2010 study found that in certain age groups, as much as 46% of women surveyed had engaged in anal sex in their lifetimes. This is an all time high given that in 1992, the highest percentage of women in any age group who admitted to anal sex was 33, which went up to 35% in 2002 and then 46% in 2010. The past few years have seen even more of an emphasis put on all things ass, with the likes of Kim Kardashian and Jen Selter inspiring women all over the world to participate in squat challenges, not to mention the recent launch of a premiere piece of sex tech that perfectly simulates everyone’s dream behind- the TwerkingButt. We’ll move on to a look at how different age and gender demographics get down with anal.

Though more and more women are opening up to anal in the bedroom, male Pornhub users are still 33% more likely to be searching for anal content than their female counterparts, according to our anonymized analytics software. This is not to say that women are opposed to anal-themed videos however, as in our most recent installment of what women want, we found ‘anal’ to be the 18th most searched for term among women that use Pornhub. What really jumped out at us though, was the lack of interest in anal among our 18-24 year old users. This same group is interestingly 290% more likely to search for My Little Pony themed porn than any other age group but is 33% less likely to search for butt sex on Pornhub. Go figure. On the other hand, anal content is the most popular among our 35-44 year old users, who are 30% more likely to search for it than any other age group. Let’s see which types of anal searches have shown the most growth over the past few years.

‘Gangbang’ is the anal-affiliated search term that has shown the most growth over the years, at an astounding 499%. Other top gainers include ‘teen,’ ‘lesbian,’ and ‘ebony’ at 263%, 200%, and 147% respectively. In this same vein, when we conducted our 2014 Year in Review, we noted that even just over the course of the previous year, there had been some considerable growth specifically with regards to ebony and group sex type content, likely contributing to the related increases we see here too. Let’s finish off with a look at which anal-related terms have dipped down in popularity the most.

It seems that Pornhub users worldwide have loosened up with searches linking ‘anal’ and ‘tight’ in that our statisticians noted this term as the one that has demonstrated the biggest drop since 2009 at 76%. Searches for ‘sexy anal’ are down 69% while searches for ‘anal brunette’ are down 59% – we’ll let you make your own jokes about these, feel free to drop them in the comment section below!

That brings us to the butt end of our anal coverage – as always, stay tuned for more awesome Insights.
